Tower Hamlets Town Hall
Shape Studio contributed to the newly refurbished Tower Hamlets Town Hall, a landmark that combines the restoration of the Grade II listed Royal London Hospital with a modern extension. This significant project, located in Whitechapel, now serves as the headquarters for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The redevelopment transforms the historic building into a civic hub, providing 26,700m² of office and public space, with facilities such as a council chamber, meeting rooms, and public services all under one roof.
Shape Studio played a key role in the detailed design and specialist fabrication of the Richlite panel system used in the council chamber. The sustainable materials, including Richlite Diamond Black and Bamboo Stratum panels, create visual contrast while enhancing acoustic comfort in the chamber, a space intended for debate and public discussion. The panels’ rich textures and long-lasting durability contribute to the Town Hall’s warm, intimate atmosphere.
Shape Studio’s contribution extended beyond standard fabrication, incorporating a highly specialized Richlite hanging system that required precision and innovation. The Richlite Diamond Black and Bamboo Stratum panels were meticulously installed to create a seamless integration with the existing architecture, enhancing both the aesthetic and acoustic qualities of the council chamber. The intricate installation of these panels, including custom detailing around curved surfaces and staircases, highlights the craftsmanship and technical expertise involved in this complex project.
