Our project at TCA is one of our largest projects. We have looked at every part of this 3 story building to redesign the space. The work was completed in three stages with Shape Studio acting as principal designer and principal contractor. Phase one updated the changing rooms and circulation spaces to bring the building up to scratch. Then phase two started to make the big changes, including the reconfiguration of the office area, building a glulam mezzanine to reconfigure how the building can be used and adding new spaces for TCA to increase their offering. The final phase completed the lower ground floor, adding a new gym, circulation spaces and enabling works for the future additon of a whole new climbing wall. From beginning to end Shape have worked incredibly closely with The Climbing Academy to deliver a long term vision for this Bristol institution.

The Mezzanine

The redevelopment of TCA Mothership brings a fresh design approach that enhances the centre’s functionality and aesthetics. The new reception area, café, shop, and events space have been thoughtfully integrated into the existing building, creating a modern, open environment that flows seamlessly with the climbing area.

The design of the reception area sets the tone with a welcoming, light-filled space, while the café and shop are designed for both comfort and practicality, offering contemporary settings that encourage relaxation and connection. The addition of the events space adds versatility, providing a multifunctional area for workshops, classes, and social events.

This design evolution of TCA Mothership enhances the centre’s role as a vibrant hub, offering an inviting atmosphere where climbers and visitors can gather, recharge, and engage with the community.

Shape’s input, from design through to implementation, has allowed us to get the finish we were dreaming of

Alan Cassidy – The Climbing Academy

The new staircase at TCA Mothership blends clean design with function. Connecting the ground floor to the new first floor, it features integrated storage for climbing shoes, keeping the space organized and uncluttered. Simple yet purposeful, this design enhances the flow of the centre while offering a practical solution for climbers.

The cafe and shop areas are finished with fully bespoke joinery designed to make the most of the space. We designed custom benches, window tables and shop storage units to extend the theme of the bar area around the space.

Adding Details

The materials used throughout the project were chosen for their texture, tone, and practicality. Textured powder-coated finishes, blue tiles, and a mix of natural wood surfaces bring warmth and contrast to the space. These simple, durable finishes add depth without feeling over-designed — helping the new areas at TCA Mothership feel both functional and inviting.

Working from Bristol & London we deliver projects throughout the UK & internationally, applying rigorous technical expertise with positivity and enthusiasm to bring ideas to reality.
